NYFW Autumn / Winter 2020: Jonathan Simkhai’s Golden Hour

In the world of photography there is a special space in time called the Golden Hour. Just as the sun is coming up or as it is falling behind the skyline at the end of the day, the world explodes in a cascade of the most warm and happy light, a light that is universally flattering and calming. The NYFW Autumn / Winter 2020 collection from Jonathan Simkhai is like the embodiment of the golden hour in garments. Warm and comfortable, universally flattering and très chic.

OK, the chic is specific to the collection, but with the impeccably tailored detail and intentionally sleek feel, the collection invokes the feel of a jetsetting professional confident enough to wear clingy slip dresses to the office without batting a coiffed eyelash.

The play of textures combining cashmere knit tops with wet leather looking long pleated skirts was a signature Simkhai move in its unconventionality. Slim black belts, hits of bold orange and unexpected flourishes throughout such as tasseled fringe and a fur collar, invigorate the entire collection. It would be a closet you definitely want to pull from, whether for a day at a de rigueur office or a playful weekend in Paris.

One could hardly call the collection neutral, but understated natural tones in monochromatic layers were brilliantly paired with bright boots in brick and sunset oranges in a cheeky commitment to the youthful vibe. Jonathan Simkhai has always leaned in the direction of vibrant, playful femininity and this collection is no different, but adds a sophistication that feels like perhaps the more refined sister has stepped in and edited. Oui, très chic.
