To see the models strut down a catwalk in Vivienne Hu is to witness the evolution of city chic. Always the go to designer of any Manhattan socialite worth her salt Vivienne Hu is definitely the label that should be on the radar of anyone aspiring to be that girl in the room who embodies style as though it’s part of her DNA. We all know the one. And Vivienne Hu dresses her.
While last year’s collection was all about the shine and the flirty mismatched “I just threw this together” look, the NYFW 2020 collection finds the same vibe while adding in a few understated, almost professionally relaxed pieces in neutral earthy tones. If you work in a position that requires you to be on trend and sip lattes all day while you “create”… let’s say you are a coveted social media strategist for an agency… this is your uniform. If you require the convenience of bistro lunches while you write your novel about Millennial life in Soho… these are your closet staples. Anything that says “first I do this, then I jump over to Madison Avenue for drinks with the fam”… this is the scene of the Vivienne Hu girl.
As per usual, the perfection is all in the details. What always sticks out about this label is the attention to embellishments around pockets and collars or perhaps an interesting twist on pattern or texture that isn’t necessary but always appreciated. Specifically the treatment of the faux fur coats embody’s the vegan fashion diva’s party girl aesthetic to the hilt, and is one of our favourite bits.
The ability to mix and match a wardrobe from one brand and not have it read as fashionably dysfunctional is an interesting superpower for a designer to offer. One could almost dress exclusively in VH and not have to worry about putting a foot wrong, even though it’s hardly what we tend to think of when we think “capsule wardrobe”. There is absolutely nothing basic about the VH collection and in fact it would take a woman with a strong sense of self to pull it off. And we want to be in her circle.
