Having made a statement even before the first walk was walked at New York Fashion Week, Prabal Gurung had already shined a spotlight on both the contentious political landscape and his 10th anniversary, SS20 collection.
The designer paid homage to the American fashion history with looks ranging from formal wear to modern athleisure with a plethora of rose prints, tie-dye, feathers, and splashes of vibrant colour.
For the finale, the models took one last spin down the runway, wearing silk sashes printed with the words: “Who gets to be an American?” — a statement which gave a nod to the recent, headline grabbing boycott of his planned NYFW show venue, Hudson Yards, in reaction to developer Stephen Ross’s ill advised fundraising event for President, Donald Trump.
I have to wonder whether the pageant influenced sashes were also a cunning dig at Trump who, before being elected as the leader of the free world, was a judge for numerous Miss World and Miss USA pageants.
Gurung, who has received mixed reactions to his stand on the political affiliations, got rave reviews when it came to his latest collection – as birthday’s go, this one definitely went with a bang.
