Deciding to embrace a holistic approach whenever possible can be a life-changing endeavor. While the exact definition of “holistic living” often varies depending on who you’re talking to, it generally means that you try to consider the bigger picture when making lifestyle choices. You focus on the well-being of your mind, body, and soul, as well as the world around you.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to living a holistic lifestyle. For some people, it means being more conscious of the environment. For others, it means using natural, sustainable products. If you’re interested in living more holistically, taking small steps over time can lead to a big transformation in the long run. Remember: it’s all about the big picture.
Reconsider Your Diet
How you fuel your body directly affects your physical, mental, and even your spiritual health. While your diet is a very personal thing, some foods are objectively bad for you and bad for the Earth. Whenever possible, try to avoid processed, factory-farmed foods, and always look for a sustainable option.
Changing your diet can be a seriously daunting undertaking. If you realize that your diet could use some improvement, try making deliberate changes slowly over time. For example, you could start with meatless Mondays and then transition into consuming less meat and more fruits and veggies on a more consistent basis.
In time, your palate will naturally evolve. You’ll start to appreciate new flavors and food combinations. You’ll also start to feel healthier and more positive. Eventually, you may even find that a cruelty-free vegan lifestyle isn’t nearly as difficult as you once assumed. It’s all about taking that first step.
Broaden Your Horizons
When it comes to changing your lifestyle, knowledge is power. Many people become too comfortable in their current lifestyle, not realizing that there are so many alternative options out there. For example, you may assume you don’t like vegan food until you try an authentic Indian curry — broadening your worldview naturally leads to exciting, new experiences!
While traveling the USA or even the world is a great way to learn about new lifestyles, you don’t need a passport to be influenced by global cultures. For example, you can check out the local library or learn some basic yoga poses online. You can go to local events and talk to other people who are looking to live more holistically. Again, it’s all about taking that first step to seek out new ways of living.
Use Sustainable Products
If you’re interested in holistic living, you should be thinking about how your lifestyle impacts the world around you. These days, most products that harm the environment have viable eco-friendly alternatives readily available.
For instance, instead of using a paper coffee cup or plastic water bottle, why not use a reusable one? Over time, that tiny change adds up. Do you drink coffee every day? That’s 365 cups that may end up sitting in a landfill. By investing in reusable cups and water bottles, you can feel good knowing that you’re making a difference, even if it’s a small one, every time you fill-up.
Beauty products are another great example. A lot of cosmetic products contain harmful chemicals, and so many of them are tested on animals. There are plenty of natural, cruelty-free beauty products available on the market, so why support those companies instead?
Be Empathetic and Mindful
When it comes to holistic living, it’s easy to get caught up in the physical changes and forget about the intangible side. In addition to taking care of your own body, living holistically also means taking care of your mind and soul, as well as your fellow humans.
Try to adjust how you view the world. Have you heard the word “sonder” before? It’s a made-up word that means, “the realization that each random passer-by is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”
In other words, try to be conscientious and aware of how your actions affect others. Try to realize that everyone has their own unique story. Try to understand the intricacies that make humans, well, human.
If you consciously try to maintain a positive, empathetic mindset, you’ll find that your life — and the lives of those around you — naturally becomes happier and more fulfilling.
Make One Change Today
Trying to change too much at once can be overwhelming. Instead, think of just one way you can make a positive shift right now. Maybe that just means exercising for half an hour. Maybe that means taking a walk in nature.
Your lifestyle is a very personal thing, so there’s no single formula or quick fix that will get you where you want to be. Start with just a single positive adjustment and then make another one tomorrow. Make a habit out of embracing small changes day after day, and eventually, you’ll look back and see a big difference.
