Throwing a party can be a blast. It is a chance to get together with family and friends and celebrate a special day. But if you’re not careful, your event can quickly leave a bigger carbon footprint than you may intend. As you’re striving to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, it is important you think through the damage your day-to-day actions may inflict on the planet. From the plates to the straws to the tablecloths, one party can create a significant amount of waste.

By following a few simple tips, you can throw a memorable party without sacrificing your commitment to minimizing waste and energy use!

Be Smart with Your Lighting

Keep your party green by cutting corners on energy consumption. Especially if you are throwing an outdoor celebration, creative lighting is a great way to express your personal style and build the ambiance you want for the get-together. The right lighting can transform your backyard into a cozy sanctuary, but hanging string after string of lights and lanterns can use a lot of electricity. Save energy while maintaining the aesthetic you want with eco-friendly, smart outdoor lights. They are rechargeable, energy efficient, and easy to control from your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Choose Biodegradable & Recyclable Alternatives

Cutting down on plastic waste is one of the easiest ways you can transform your event into an earth-friendly affair. Just think of all the trash you normally take out after a large gathering! Join the movement many restaurants and cafes, including Starbucks, are advocating for and switch out typical, plastic straws for paper ones. For plates, napkins, cups, and utensils, ditch anything that goes into the trash. There are plenty of recyclable and compostable alternatives that will still save you from a heaping sink of dishes without causing harm to the planet.

Shop for Unique & Reusable Items

Deciding to be eco-friendly in your planning can actually give you a chance to work more of your personal taste and style into the event. Instead of choosing generic plastic serving trays, tablecloths, and decorations, invest in higher-quality alternatives you can use again and again. For example, a beautiful, hand-printed tablecloth is a great way to decorate your space during the event and you can always reuse them at home! You can even store leftovers with a reusable, washable bee’s wrap, a great replacement for plastic wrap. A large, unique serving tray is another tasteful and effective way to reduce the use of plastic. Guests will notice your attention to detail and appreciate the personal touches you included in the preparation.

With growing awareness about the effects of climate change, industries are innovating sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives to many of our go-to items (even smartphone cases!). Your everyday choices as a consumer are important when it comes to protecting the planet. When planning your next party, consider taking the time to switch out plastic for reusable or recyclable options. A little bit of effort can go a long way!
