Festival Watch: Austin City Limits

Where:     Austin, Texas, USA

When:      Oct 6-8 & 13-15

Who:        Jay Z, Chance the Rapper, Gorillaz, Run The Jewels, Solange, RHCP

Austin City Limits (produced by the same folks that bring you Lollapalooza) is a staple of the late summer festival season. Even if by some chance the line up was not your style, you are smack dab in the music mecca of Austin, Texas. That said, the lineup this year is an absolute brilliant blend of rock, hip hop, electronic, and indie. And because you are in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band…so there’s always a hint of country music sprinkled throughout.

Over two weekends every October, nearly half a million people flood to the eight stages dotted around Zilker Park, made even more exciting this year given Zilker Park is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

The festival also gives concert-goers the ability to get involved with local organizations and to give back to the community via ACL Cares. Amazing organizations such as The Nature Conservancy and the local PBS station have benefited in past years.

ACL also makes a trend setting example to reduce its footprint. Having approximately 450,000 people in a park over 2 weekends creates quite the environmental footprint. You have to think nearly a half million people aren’t bringing plates and cups with them. Last year over half of the trash normally headed for the landfill (a total of over 160 tons) was diverted to recycling centres. Over 3000 attendees received fest swag for volunteering and helping out with the cleaning efforts, and nearly 900,000 water bottles were saved by fans filling at water stations rather then buying bottles. And more eco-friendly activities are planned for this year’s event.

So many amazing festivals this year, we know, but Austin City Limits needs to be on everyone’s short list…
