Tips for a Perfect Day in Sydney

Sydney is a big international city with many iconic landmarks and gorgeous hidden gems to explore, so having only 24 hours to spend in this Australian city might not be enough to truly get to know it. However, if you plan your day well, you can tick off plenty of things from your Sydney must-see list. Here’s how to spend a perfect day in Sydney:

Take a walking tour

After you land, it’s time to make the most out of the remainder of the day. The best way to do so is to find a walking tour and explore the city on a two-hour low-pace walk. This way, you’ll not only see the most important landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Hyde Park Barracks, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Queen Victoria Building and more but see some hidden spots and learn a lot about the city, people and culture from your local guide.

Visit the beach

Once your walking tour is over, go to Bondi Beach and soak up the evening sun while you do some light drinking, snacking and people watching. If you’re into beach sports, you can try surfing, water skiing or beach volleyball, but you can also just rest your legs and keep an eye on wildlife like whales, dolphins and penguins.

Grab a bite

Before you retire to your accommodation, make sure to get to know Sydney from a different standpoint—through food. This city is very diverse so you can find everything from 100% authentic Asian food, to amazing Australian steak and everything in between that local cooks mix into a unique cooking culture. You must try a tender Wagyu brisket, Australian lamb curry or fresh line-caught snapper fried and smothered in fish sauce.

Hire a boat

Sydney is one of the most famous harbor cities in the world, so you must spend at least a day exploring the stunning beaches, bays and iconic landmarks dotted around. However, since you only have one day to spend in Sydney, reserve the night for harbor exploration. If you opt for overnight boat hire in Sydney, you can enjoy the night views of the city, have a pleasant evening on the deck with champagne in your hand and fall asleep to a gentle lull of the ocean. And when you wake up, you’ll be ready for another half day of exploration and excitement.

Have classy breakfast

Have an early start and make sure to start your day right after stepping on land and grab breakfast in Surry Hills. Hotcakes with honeycomb butter or fritters with avo salsa will ensure you have enough fuel to finish your 24 hours in Sydney. This neighborhood also has the best coffee in Sydney with many coffee laboratories serving the freshest high-quality brew.

Get cultured

After lunch and coffee, make your way to the Museum of Contemporary Art and learn about the Best Australian artists of today. This museum is located on Circular Quay, so you will get another look at the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and catch up with photographs.

Go shopping

Before you grab a ride to the airport, take the opportunity to spend all your Australian dollars and shop in Queen Victoria Building which houses the best boutiques, jewelry stores and antique spots. This place is the perfect spot to pick up a unique souvenir such as a pink diamond or a unique specialty writing instrument. And don’t forget to grab a snack for the trip: have a fancy mid-morning high tea experience or sample a few signature macarons from one of the QVB patisseries.

These 24 hours in Sydney might be short, but you will use your time wisely and find time for everything from exploration and culture to food, shopping and rest. And next time you visit Sydney (and you certainly will), hopefully, you’ll have a little more time to get to know it properly.
