Since 2012, Sephora has graciously rewarded their Sephora Beauty Insiders with “points” that represented each dollar that they spent at the store. These points could be racked up and saved so that they could be used in purchasing a product that can be bought with points. It’s as easy as scrolling through the Sephora “rewards bazaar”, where you are able to see all of the lovely products you can buy with a certain amount of points. For example, for just 100 points, one can buy a tube of the Buxom Lash Mascara. From a business perspective, this is definitely a good thing. Instead of someone feeling badly for splurging on makeup at Sephora, they will know that they can use the points they earned to get “free” products later on. Hence, the guilt factor of a shopping spree is somewhat eliminated. In addition, a customer might have a strong desire for one of the “point” products that aren’t available for purchase with real money. This might drive the customer to buy more products in order to gain enough points to buy the other.
However, Sephora recently announced shocking news concerning the longevity of these points. According to Business Insider, in their new terms & conditions, Sephora states that “All unredeemed points shall expire when a program member has not engaged in point activity associated with that membership account (through purchase or redemption) for 18 months or more”. Not all hope is lost, however, as this just means that if one doesn’t buy anything from Sephora in 18 months, then their points will expire. Thus, so long as you make a purchase here and there, your beauty points will stay intact.
