The fashion industry has truly lost an icon, Franca Sozzani, the legendary editor in chief of Vogue Italia, passed away Thursday in her home town of Milan, at the mere age of 66 from lung cancer. The “Lady of Fashion”, by what she was called by the Italians. Fashion was a huge part of her life, but did not see that as the only important role in her life. Philanthropy was a huge part of her life where she dedicated much of her time to supporting humanitarian projects around the world.
As part of her humanitarian efforts, Sozzani was appointed to the post of ambassador for the Fashion 4 Development program within the United Nations in 2012. Sozzani was also U.N. Ambassador Against Hunger and she supported the European Institute of Oncology.
Sozzani did not shy away from controversy, she was outspoken on the biggest issues of fashion, such as the weight debate, plastic surgery and racism. Her landmark all-black issue, which was an entire issue devoted to celebrate black women’s beauty landed her praise for celebrating black models in the fashion industry.
The industry has lost one of it’s truly beautiful people, Franca, you will missed. There will never be anyone quite like you.
