Before The Flood: DiCaprio Teams Up To Solve Climate Change

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Mogwai, and Argentine film composer Gustavo Santaolalla release their soundtrack today for Before the Flood–Leonardo DiCaprio’s climate change documentary with National Geographic. (See the stunning video for the song “A Minute To Breathe” below, available on iTunes.) Working with the original Nine Inch Nails team inspired Reznor to discuss this project and a new NIN album in an interview with Zane Lowe in which he claims that the working title of the film has so far been “Are We F***ed Yet?”

As a United Nations Messenger for Peace, DiCaprio is hoping this documentary, co- produced by Academy Award winner Fisher Stevens, will prompt action around the urgency of climate change and the disastrous effects we are seeing emerging globally.

The climate change film presents an account of how society can prevent the demise of endangered species, ecosystems and native communities across the globe. Audiences are presented with visual evidence of a worsening environmental crisis that is inflicting irreversible damage on pristine landscapes from Greenland to Indonesia, disturbing the balance of our planet’s climate and hastening the extinction of of our wildlife but what is most important National Geographic says, is that it also presents practical solutions to save the planet.

Often we are lobbied with visuals that create a sense of desperation, we are bombarded with beautiful but depressing imagery that makes us feel helpless without directly addressing ways that members of society can take measures that will add up to creating real change in the right direction. This film aims to fill that need, allow the audience to realize that indeed we do hold the power to create positive change.

During the filming, DiCaprio interviewed key power people including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Pope Francis, as well as top NASA researchers, forest conservationists, revered scientists, community leaders and many passionate activists tirelessly working to save the world.

This documentary translates the symptoms and solutions of climate change before information is distorted, as it often is, by those with a financial interest in fossil fuel production.”

National Geographic plans to release the DiCaprio doc theatrically in New York and Los Angeles this October followed by a global premiere on National Geographic Channel in 171 countries in 45 languages preceding the U.S. election in November.
