Venice Film Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious international film festivals in the world. Some say that the winners of this award are a prelude of what is to come for the upcoming Oscar buzz where winners were chosen by a jury led by the director Sam Mendes for the 2016 season. Some were the drama premieres that we’ll see over the next coming months and then there were those that won’t premiere until next year. With that being said, we know that this will be one of the most competitive film festival season we’ve seen by far.
The festival opened on Wednesday September 7th with Damien Chazelle’s musical “La La Land,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Faced with many contenders such as Natalie Portman for her role as Jacqueline Kennedy in Pablo Larrain’s ‘‘Jackie”, “Arrival,” starring Amy Adams and Ana Lily Amirpour’s, “The Bad Batch,” starring Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves; a Texan cannibal love story they will be sure to be under the spotlight. Not only do we have these big films, but smaller films are seeing their fair share as well.
While we see experienced Hollywood directors such as Mel Gibson, who has been rather “silent” for the past few years, presented his World War II film “Hacksaw Ridge,” starring Andrew Garfield. As the Venice Film Festival wrapped up this week, now we look forward to the Toronto Film Festival to see how far each of the these films got and how many more make it to the end.
