On April 11, 2016 the TBS channel is on the road with “The Detour” starring an unordinary family as they venture on a road trip and make a few wrong turns along the way. The sitcom follows wacky dad Nate (Jason Jones – co creator, actor), his wife Robin (Natalie Zea) and two kids Deliah (Ashley Gerasimovich) and Jared (Liam Carroll). Just like the show “The Detour” cast took a deviation route to Style Fashion Week Los Angeles where I was able to interview with the Creative Director of Pink Pirate Agency, Malena Belafonte to talk about her career, fashion and why “The Detour” was the perfect addition to Style Fashion Week.
What is something you’d like us to know about you? I have been a performer since I was a child. I had a great career as an International fashion model and have done lots of TV shows, like Dancing with the Stars in Europe, Fort Boyard, record deals and several publishing deals. I co-founded a magazine and have been a published writer since I was 18 and I also co-founded The Speyer Legacy School which is a private k-8 school in New York City for accelerated learners. During all these years I used my “celebrity” status to help raise funds for pediatric AIDS and HIV as well as many other organizations. I joined boards and ended up producing hundreds of huge events all over the world all while I was modeling full time. Pink Pirate Agency is a company I created to use my unique experiences in front and behind the scenes to give others a one stop shop for anything fashion, beauty, music, art, entertainment, and production with a twist. In addition, I consult as creative Director and Head of Casting for Style Fashion Week.
Why did you choose “The Detour” for Style Fashion Week? The amazing head of PR from TBS, Eileen Quast came to me and wanted something different for the screening of their new comedy series The Detour. I thought a cool yet casual, a fashionable, yet sassy environment was what they needed. I suggested doing something different where anything can happen and somewhere it has never been done before. A screening on the runway during LA Fashion week in front of a Style Fashion Week audience sure fit all of those ideas and was as much a detour for “The Detour” as it was for Style Fashion Week. In TV everything is organized and timed perfectly, In Fashion everything is about the moment of surprise and uniqueness. So the pairing of those two platforms was so exciting to me.
Did you intentionally gear your audience towards young adults? The idea was to expand the audience and I knew our Style Fashion Week Audience would appreciate the humor. It’s an audience that stands out from the other fashion week attendees; it is a little funkier and a little more rock’n roll which is exactly the audience for the Detour. The lead actress, Natalie Zea is a new mom, yet she could have been a model herself, or she could have been an audience member during Style Fashion Week. She IS the audience. It was about analyzing all of that, to create the perfect screening for The Detour.
Would you say your expectations for this show was a success? How so – This was unchartered territory so I prepared everyone to have a range of expectations, including myself. It was definitely a huge success. People were laughing hysterically. The LA palm trees as the backdrop, the people and fashion. And the venue at The Pacific Design Center was stunning. This was a screening with a 50 foot red carpet, press and VIPs like Shari Belafonte, actress Stephanie Kramer, Nikki the runway Cat, The Real Housewives from Bravo, Justin the living Ken Doll, and the beautiful female star Natalie Zea. I mean, what is more “Detour” than that?!
Thank you, Malena Belafonte, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us. We at Trend Prive wish Style Fashion Week and “The Detour” continued success and more fashion weeks and laughs ahead.
